Itinerary

Day 1. ORIGIN - GIJÓN

Upon arrival at the chosen hotel we will check-in and get ready to learn about the local culture. We will take this day as free time to unpack our luggage and relax with a walk and a good overview of the city and its streets.

After this free afternoon we will return to the hotel to have strength and be well rested for the next day with more action.

Day 2. Gijón

Second day in the selected accommodation. Once breakfast is over, we will prepare to explore Gijón with a guided tour. Gijón is the most populated city in Asturias and has a history of nearly 2,700 years. On this day we will visit the old neighborhood of fishermen and cigar makers, Cimadevilla. Here we will find, among many others, the Campo Valdés Roman Baths, the Church of San Pedro and the Jovellanos Birthplace Museum. Also the Cerro de Santa Catalina with its iconic sculpture by Eduardo Chillida, Elogio del Horizonte.

Once the tour is over, we will have the rest of the day free to experience the streets at our leisure and recreate ourselves again in what we liked the most.

Going around the alleys of the neighborhood we will arrive at the Mayor de Gijón beach and we will be able to approach the outskirts to see the Monument of the Mother of the Emigrant in Rinconín where we can see its coves. If we have time we can go to one of the most incredible buildings in Gijón, which is the U.Laboral, a city of culture near the Atlantic Botanical Garden.

We will eat in the area since Gijón is one of the best gastronomic destinations in the north of Spain with eternal classics such as Chopa de la Cider, Lamb on the stake, pregnant bun, cachopo, scorpion fish cake or its different Calderetas from Gijón without forgetting to make an espicha which is cider served from the barrel.

If you are a golf lover, very close to each other you will find several golf clubs such as the Golf Madera III club, Deva golf pitch & Putt, La Llorea Municipal Golf Course or the Real Club Golf de Castiello.

When we are ready we will return to our accommodation to rest for a new adventure the next day.Oviedo.

Day 3.  Avilés - Cudillero - Luarca

After breakfast at the hotel today we will make an excursion along the western coast of Asturias.

We will start with the third most important town in Asturias, Avilés. It is famous for its fishing port and its Historic Center, which was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1955. Its streets have withstood the ravages of time like few others, maintaining buildings and arcades (it is the second city with the most arcades in Spain, after Santiago de Compostela ) since centuries. The route that we suggest starts from the Plaza de España and the Plaza Domingo Álvarez Acebal that is next to it. Galiana street starts from the latter, famous for being the one with the largest number of arcades, more than 250 consecutive meters, and one of the most charming corners of Avilés. From here and crossing the Ferrara Park we will arrive at Rivero street, a fifteenth-century pedestrian street from where we will go to the historic center and the Sabugo neighborhood, an old fishermen's neighborhood, located next to the Ría. We will continue through the neighborhood to the neo-Gothic Church of Santo Tomás de Canterbury and we will end up on the banks of the Ría from where we will observe the Niemeyer Center, a futuristic-style cultural center.

Our second stop of the day will be Cudillero. It is a town embedded and cloistered on the side of a hill, which gives its multicolored buildings a very characteristic amphitheater shape. It is a small town but it has not lost a bit of charm since the 13th century. Although its most recognizable image is that of the Plaza de la Marina, it is possible to observe each of its corners from its numerous viewpoints. There are several signposted routes from where you can see its lighthouse, its port and its many narrow streets.

The last stop today would be Luarca. A fishing village since the Middle Ages, but unlike the previous ones, this one stands out for the white of its houses, giving a more typical image of southern Spain. Perhaps the most picturesque part of the town is the Pescadería neighborhood with its stately mansions from the end of the 19th century. But we cannot miss the fishing port and especially the Atalaya, where the Chapel of the Virgen Blanca, the lighthouse and the cemetery, facing the coast and of a surprisingly beautiful white, where the remains of the legendary Nobel Prize winner for medicine of the year 1959, the biochemist Severo Ochoa. From here we will get wonderful views of the coast of Luarca.

Day 4. Ribadesella - Llanes - Cangas de Onis

After a restful night and a good breakfast, we will check out at our hotel in Gijón to head east.

On the way to Cangas de Onís we will make several stops along the Asturian eastern coast. The first will be Ribadesella, famous for its very important International Descent. It is a beautiful town to admire on foot and also has such special places as the Cueva de Tito Bustillo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, some rock caves with well-preserved paintings or the Cuevona de Cuevas del Agua, which is a peculiar tunnel through which you can go by car.

20 minutes from Ribadesella, we find another obligatory stop: Gulpiyuri Beach. A spectacular inland beach that does not have views of the sea because it has some cliffs that separate it from the beach below which the salt water seeps. White sands and unique views in a declared Natural Monument.

The last town to discover is Llanes where we will find the Paseo de San Pedro. From there we will see the cliffs and the Talá viewpoint, we will go along the Sablón beach towards the center of the town towards the Basilica of Santa María del Conejo and see the abandoned Palace of the Dukes of Estrada and the Medieval Tower. We can see the representative cubes of memory and go to the Llanes lighthouse to the net shopkeeper to finally see the most impressive Toró beach.

After this last stop we will head to Cangas de Onís where we will check-in at our accommodation and prepare to spend the night.

Day 5. CANGAS DE ONÍS - COVADONGA LAKES - OVIEDO

After breakfast and when we are ready, we will check-out at our accommodation to enter the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park. We will visit Los Lagos de Covadonga, the Real Sitio and Cangas de Onís itself.

Within the town the most representative without a doubt is its Roman Bridge with its hanging Victoria Cross, of course it is one of the most representative images of Asturias. From this valley nestled between high mountains you can see the mountains and forests of the Park in the landscape. It was the place, they say, of the beginning of the reconquest by decimating the Muslim attacks that approached these slopes with Pelayo at the head.

Later we will go up to the Royal Site of Covadonga. The Virgin of Covadonga is found in the Holy cave where it is said that Don Pelayo took refuge. Here is a small hermitage and a waterfall that falls directly into a large pool.

At the top of the hill is the Sanctuary built with an incredible reddish stone among the green of the vegetation.

If we wish, we also have the option of going to the Mirador de Entrelagos to see the Covadonga lakes in an idyllic setting. Access to the lakes of Covadonga this year 2022 is free by private vehicle throughout the year but has some restrictions during the high season from May 31 to October 17, both days included and other specific days. For more information we can send us to the official page.

At the end of our day we will head to Oviedo where we will check-in at our accommodation and relax properly.

Day 6. Oviedo

We will have breakfast at the hotel and then we will explore the city of Oviedo on a guided tour. This visit will place special emphasis on its cathedral, where relics such as the Holy Shroud or jewels such as the Cross of the Angels or the Victoria Cross associated with the time when the city was the capital of the Asturian Monarchy are guarded.

But Oviedo has much more to offer than its other pre-Romanesque jewels: the church of Santa María del Naranco and its surroundings on Mount Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo and San Julián de los Prados. The Basilica of San Juan el Real or Campo San Francisco where we can find a statue of Mafalda or Woody Allen. And we cannot forget a great forgotten that nevertheless shines for the quality of its works: the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias.

To eat in the gastronomy of Oviedo, the famous Fabada, the Cabrales cheese and the carbayones stand out. In general, traditional and homemade dishes that will delight everyone.
