World Heritage Cities and the most varied gastronomy to enjoy an experience of infinite treasures in an unknown Spain.
Day 1. ORIGIN - SALAMANCA
Upon arrival at the chosen hotel, we will check-in and get ready to marvel at the local culture.
We will take this day as free time to pack our luggage and relax with a walk and a good overview of the city and its streets. After this free afternoon we will return to the hotel to recharge our batteries and be well rested for the next day with more movement.
Day 2. Guided tour Salamanca
Second day in the selected accommodation. After breakfast we will prepare to explore the "charra" capital on a guided tour that can be done comfortably on foot. We will meet with the guide at the time agreed by the historic center. Some of the elements that we will find are the Plaza Mayor, the famous Casa de las Conchas, the Old University of Salamanca, which is the oldest in Spain and the Hispanic world, and the third in Europe, and the Cathedrals of Salamanca, the New and la Vieja, which stand together and have been declared a Historic-Artistic Site.
The typical gastronomy of Salamanca offers numerous possibilities. From the famous Guijuelo ham to the chanfaina (a dish with Jewish and Arab influences that uses lamb and not pork) through the Hornazo Salmantino and the Armuña lentil. And for dessert we can choose between maimón bun and Ledesma donuts
In the afternoon we will have free time if we wish to return to the places that we liked the most or inspect some new and somewhat less touristy ones such as Casa Lis or the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea, which also deserve recognition.
Finished our departure we will return to our accommodation to delight ourselves with a well-deserved sleep.
Day 3. Salamanca - Zamora - Toro - Salamanca
Breakfast at the hotel and we will get ready as today we will discover Zamora. Despite not standing out due to its size, it can boast of being the European city with the largest number of Romanesque temples, which has earned it the title of "City of the Romanesque" or "Pearl of the Romanesque".
The route that we recommend starts from Calle de Santa Clara where you can already see both the aforementioned Romanesque of the Church of Santiago del Burgo and the modernism of Plaza Sagasta. Thanks to the buildings in this square and several others that bathe the city, Zamora is part of the exclusive group of municipalities of the European Route of Modernism. Next we will find ourselves in the Plaza Mayor de Zamora next to its most famous street, Calle de Balborraz. Extremely steep, it was inhabited by artisans since the 10th century. Continuing through the historic center and passing through a multitude of churches and viewpoints over the Duero, we will arrive at the Cathedral of Zamora and its Castle, which are very close and offer spectacular views. We will eat in the city that has a large number of typical products and dishes for all tastes, with cheese, wine, Zamora-style rice or garlic soups standing out.
In the afternoon, we will approach the nearby city of Toro, which is located on top of a hill above the Duero River. This town prospered during the Middle Ages both because of its border location and because of its wine production that forged the popular quote by Alfonso IX, I have a Bull that gives me wine and a Lion that drinks it for me. The Paseo del Espolón that joins the Alcázar with its Collegiate Church provides beautiful views over the Toro plain.
Day 4. Salamanca - Avila - Valladolid
Breakfast at the hotel and once the check-out is done, we will leave for Ávila.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is known for its formidable medieval walls. It is one of the only 3 walls that remain complete in Spain, the others belonging to Segovia and Lugo. The medieval historic center of the city, although full of elements of interest, is small, so the tour can be easily done on foot.
Our suggestion is to start with the Convent of Santa Teresa de Jesús, in the baroque style and declared a National Monument. It was built in 1636 on the birthplace of Santa Teresa. The highlight of the interior is the room in which Saint Teresa was born, converted into a highly ornate chapel. The next stop is the Palacio de los Dávila, within the route of the city's Renaissance palaces, most of which have a beautiful interior porticoed patio. The most outstanding apart from the one just named are: the Palacio de los Velada, the Casa de Superunda and the one that today is the seat of the Diputación de Ávila, the Torreón de los Guzmanes.
Thus wandering between palaces we will enter the Plaza del Mercado Chico, considered the Plaza Mayor of Ávila. It is located in the center of the historic center and is presided over by the City Council and the Church of San Juan Bautista.
We will continue towards the Basilica of San Vicente passing in front of the Palacio de los Verdugo, another of the most important in the city. This church is a great example of Romanesque art in Spain. It was built in granite from Cali, which gives it its unmistakable orange color, between the 12th and 14th centuries, adding its arcaded gallery in the 15th century.
Inside it houses the Cenotaph of the Holy Brothers Martyrs in which the martyrdom in that same place of Saints Vicente, Cristeta and Sabina is recounted.
After visiting it we will return to the old town towards the Cathedral. It is a fortress cathedral whose exterior makes clear its strong military and defensive function.
Then we will arrive at the Plaza del Mercado Grande, which owes its name to the fact that the largest market in the city was traditionally held here. It has one of the most impressive views and the Puerta del Alcázar, one of the nine built into the wall. The square is also presided over on one of its sides by the church of San Pedro Apóstol, declared a National Monument in 1914.
Finally we will reach the Royal Monastery of Santo Tomas, which is already outside the walls. It was founded in 1483 thanks to the patronage of the Catholic Monarchs who also used it as a summer palace.
Regarding food, the city has great dishes, many of them centered on the meat of its cattle, such as the Ávila steak and legumes such as the beans from El Barco or the chickpeas from La Moraña. Its famous dessert is the yemas de Santa Teresa.
We will say goodbye to the city from the Cuatro Postes viewpoint to recreate ourselves with the sunset lights, starting later and ending our day in Valladolid where our new accommodation awaits us. We will check-in and relax to spend the night in the most comfortable way possible.
Day 5. Valladolid guided tour
As soon as we have had breakfast at the accommodation and we are ready, we will explore Valladolid on a guided tour. We will visit places in the Historic Center of Valladolid, one of the most monumental areas of the city.
We will start with the Plaza de San Pablo and its surroundings which has the nickname of Valladolid de la Corte. Here we will find a sample of the 400 Renaissance Palaces that the city is said to have had. Some of the most representative are the Royal Palace, the Pimentel Palace, the birthplace of Felipe II, or the Villena Palace. Next to them is the Casa de José Zorrilla and its magnificent garden.
Also in the same square is the Church of San Pablo with its splendid façade, one of the most representative buildings in Valladolid.
Later we will visit other spaces such as the Church of Las Angustias, the Calderón Theater, the Church of Santa María de La Antigua and the Plaza de la Universidad until we reach the Cathedral of Valladolid, where we can see the ruins of the former Collegiate Church. . Continuing towards the Plaza Mayor we will pass through the modernist Pasaje Gutiérrez, one of the most photographed places in the city.
The Plaza Mayor of Valladolid boasts of being the first regular arcaded main square in Spain, a model that would be followed by some of the most renowned such as Madrid or Salamanca.
We will conclude the tour with the Plaza Zorrilla, a central square from which some of the main arteries of the city start and where the statue dedicated to José Zorrilla, the Cavalry Academy and the entrance to the Campo Grande stand out.
At the end of the tour we will eat in the area enjoying the best typical dishes of the city. Among them we would highlight: the asparagus from Tudela de Duero, the Sheep cheese or Pata de Mulo, the Potatoes to the importance and as dessert the Mantecados de Portillo and Zapatillas.
Later we will have the afternoon free to wander freely or revisit what we liked the most.
Day 6. Valladolid - Segovia - Valladolid
New dawn in Valladolid. Today when we have had breakfast we will leave the province for a few hours towards Segovian lands.
The itinerary that we suggest starts from the famous Aqueduct of Segovia, one of the most important in the entire Roman Empire, with a length of 15 kilometers and two levels. It is impressive how it has been preserved in such a splendid state for 2000 years without any kind of cement or mortar between its ashlars. It is a masterpiece and without a doubt the most impressive Roman construction in Spain.
From the Plaza del Azoguejo, from where we will admire it from the base, we will head towards the Plaza Mayor de Segovia, but first we will make two stops. The first of them in the Casa de los Picos from the beginning of the 16th century, whose façade overflows with granite ashlars carved into diamond points. Popular tradition says that the owner wanted to prevent the house from having a "Jewish style", as the Jewish Quarter of Segovia was quite close, or that he did so to stop being known as "the House of the Jew", since it seems that the Jewish man also lived here. executioner of Segovia, of Jewish origin.
The second stop will be called Plaza de las Sirenas by Segovians in relation to the two sculptures that accompany the statue of Juan Bravo. However, it is about two sphinxes and not two sirens, so it is not known if the name of the Plaza is prior to its commission by the city council. In any case, it is a very beautiful square with some of the most emblematic monuments of the city.
This is a good area to eat. In the city, the typical gastronomy includes: beans from La Granja, suckling pig from Segovia, Segovian trout and the most characteristic dessert, the Segovian punch.
Then we will arrive at the Plaza Mayor de Segovia, which is next to its Cathedral. It is the heart of the city with lots of life and good atmosphere. The Cathedral belongs to the Gothic style but with Renaissance features due to the fact that its construction was carried out between the 16th and 17th centuries. It is called the Lady of the Cathedrals due to its large size and grandeur, especially its stained glass windows.
Continuing towards the Alcázar we will make a stop at the Valle de los Clamores viewpoint where we can appreciate the views of the wall. They have their origin in Roman times, 3rd century AD. and as we said before, it is another of those that remain complete in Spain.
Finally we will reach the Alcázar of Segovia with its appearance of a fairytale castle. Palace and fortress of the kings of Castile is austere as are the people of the area. Its characteristic tower of Homage, elevated on the rock, gives the impression of a great ship on the valley of the Eresma.
At the end of our tour of Segovia, we will return to our accommodation in Valladolid for a well-earned rest.
