Circuit at your own pace by car in which in 7 days (6 nights) you will enjoy different places in Cádiz and its white villages.

Founded in 1100 BC, Cádiz is the oldest in Europe of all the current cities. Thanks to this circuit we will navigate through different periods of its history from the ancient Phoenicians to the Modern Age, observing the traces left by different cultures.

We will also visit some of the white villages. These are towns located in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema natural park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, which receives this name due to the white color of the lime that bathes the facades of their houses. Many still maintain their Arab and medieval essence with palaces and castles framed in a beautiful natural setting. White on green.

Itinerary

Day 1. ORIGIN - CADIZ

Upon arrival at the chosen hotel, we will check-in and get ready to marvel at the local culture.

We will take this day as free time to pack our luggage and relax with a walk and a good overview of the city and its streets. After this free afternoon we will return to the hotel to recharge our batteries and be well rested for the next day with more movement.

Day 2. Guided tour Cadiz

Second day in the selected accommodation. After breakfast we will prepare to explore the capital on a guided panoramic tour that can be done comfortably on foot. We will meet with the guide at the time agreed by the historic center. Cádiz is a city brimming with history and thanks to this tour we will experience it from Phoenician and Roman antiquity to its Napoleonic period and the Constitution of 1812.

In the typical gastronomy of Cádiz, seafood products such as shrimp omelette, fried fish, or red tuna stand out. For dessert we recommend trying their traditional Cádiz bread.

In the afternoon we will have free time if we wish to return to the places that we liked the most or visit any of the monuments that require admission, such as the Cathedral of Cádiz.

After our departure, we will return to our accommodation for a well-deserved sleep.

Day 3. Sanlucar de Barrameda - Vejer de la Frontera

Breakfast at the hotel and we will get ready as today we will discover two places of great interest very close to Cádiz.

The first is Sanlúcar de Barrameda, which is located in a privileged position on the left bank of the mouth of the Guadalquivir. Due to this, it has starred in numerous events throughout history as a port of departure for some of the great expeditions of Magellan, Columbus or Juan Sebastián el Cano. It is also one of the places on this circuit where we can delight ourselves with a walk along the beach.

The town consists of several interesting enclaves such as the Plaza del Cabildo, the Covachas, the temple of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados or the Castillo de Santiago. Its gastronomic specialty is its famous prawns.

The second is Vejer de la Frontera, one of the most beautiful white villages on the coast of Cádiz. It is perched on a hill with splendid views over the Atlantic Ocean. We suggest strolling through its historic center with whitewashed streets and flowery patios. We cannot miss its Torre de la Corredera (from the 15th century), the Castle and the church of Divino Salvador. Also well known is the Plaza de España with its tiled fountain reminiscent of neighboring Seville.

We can finish off the day watching the sunset from El Palmar before returning to the accommodation in Cádiz to rest quietly.

Day 4. Border Arches - Ubrique

New dawn in Cádiz. On this day we will depart towards the interior of the province to begin our itinerary through some of the white towns of Cadiz, visiting two of the most important.

The port of entry on this route will be Arcos de la Frontera, declared a National Historic-Artistic Site in 1962. Its strategic position on a hill above the Guadalete River caught the attention of various cultures that settled in the area, but its current urban configuration owes to its Muslim origins with cobbled streets, patios and arches. Regarding the most notable elements, we would have the Castle of the Dukes, the Cuesta de Belén, the Plaza del Cabildo, the Mayorazgo Palace or the Church of San Pedro.

The second is Ubrique, very famous for its age-old leather goods. Its historic quarter was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest for striking a balance between conserving a large part of its essence from previous decades and simultaneously adapting to the orography of the mountain. Among the places in this historic center we cannot miss the Hermitage of San Juan de Letrán, the Capuchin Convent, the Hermitage of Calvario and the Route of the viewpoints.

In addition, a couple of kilometers from the town center we find the Archaeological Site of Ocuri, which has signs of having been a pre-Roman and Roman municipality of great importance and which reveals a clear Roman past, also attested to by the road that linked Ubrique and Benaocaz.

Day 5. Route through the White Towns

Today when we have had breakfast we will continue with our itinerary through the white villages of the interior of the province. Today we will go through quite small mountain villages, so it will give us time to see several.

The first of these is El Bosque, a small town with narrow streets lined with Arab-style houses. In it are the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Ducal Palace, the hermitage of Calvario and the ruins of the castle of Tavizna, but what stands out the most is its close contact with nature. It has a rich flora and fauna and is surrounded by several hiking trails and springs.

The next stop on our way is Grazalema. Like the previous one, it is made up of labyrinthine streets, with whitewashed houses and balconies full of brightly colored flowers. As a curiosity, fir forests grow in its surroundings, a primitive species of fir, which attract numerous tourists every year.

Zahara de la Sierra is our next town which is located on a cliff with a reservoir at the foot of the hill. The most remarkable thing is precisely the highest area where the Torre del Homenaje, remains of the old fortress, and impressive views of the mountains are located.

The next and last point on our list is Prado del Rey. It is one of the smallest municipalities in the area and there is evidence of settlements in the area since the Neolithic. Despite the fact that its period of greatest splendor was the Roman period, the Phoenicians already exploited the existing salt flats that remain to this day and form a very interesting visit.

Day 6. Guided tour in Jerez de la Frontera - Medina Sidonia

As soon as we have had breakfast at the accommodation and we are ready, we will explore Jerez de la Frontera on a guided tour. We will get to know places in the historic center: its architecture, its streets, its monuments, emblematic buildings and its squares. Corners that still preserve the essence of past times.

After the tour we will eat in the area tasting the best typical dishes of the city. Among them, spoon stews such as ajocaliente and sherry cabbage and others such as aneto, which is prepared with two chicken fillets stuffed with Serrano ham and cheese with Castilian sauce, are worthy of mention.

Later we will approach the municipality of Medina - Sidonia which is located between the Sierra de Cádiz and the Atlantic Ocean.

Declared a Historic Complex and Prize for the Beautification of Andalusian Towns, its very place name tells us of an important historical legacy. Its foundation is traditionally attributed to the arrival of Phoenician settlers from Sidon and centuries later it was the capital of the Muslim Cora. But many other civilizations have left important vestiges there. It was a Roman colony of great importance, capital of the province in the Visigothic period and during the Reconquest it was the seat of military orders until it became part of the Lordship of the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia in 1440. It was at this time that it reached its greatest splendor. Among the places that we cannot miss are the Church of Santa María la Mayor la Coronada, a Gothic-Renaissance temple built on an old mosque, and the Visigoth hermitage of the Santos Mártires, dating from the year 403, the oldest temple in Andalusia. .

Likewise, three doors of the old wall are preserved: the Arco de Belén, the Puerta del Sol and the Arab arch of La Pastora. Very close to the latter stands one of the best preserved areas of the wall

Finally, it is essential to go up to the "Cerro del Castillo" Archaeological Complex, some 300 meters above sea level. It is made up of the remains of three superimposed fortifications: the Roman military castellum, the Arab fortress and the medieval castle in an archaeological complex. still in the process of excavation and investigation.

After the experience, we will return to our accommodation in Cádiz to recover from this long day full of experiences.
